Apple TV+'s Severanceis a convoluted display with several essential characters and narratives to keep path of, and Burt and Irving's is one of the most crucial. After three years, the mind-bending sci-fi demonstrate with episodes directed by Ben Stiller is finally assist, and the extended gap contributes to the confusion one might experience tuning back in. If you’re tuning intoSeverance, then you’re well aware of the existing tie between Irving (John Turturro) and Burt (Christopher Walken). They met in Season 1 at Lumon, with Burt hailing from the Optics and Design (O&D) department, handling art for the office building on the severed floor, while Irving operated out of the Macrodata Refinement (MDR) department.
Their connection was something that grew over age as rule-follower Irving began taking field trips to see Burt in his department. It was one of the sweeter aspects of Season 1 until Burt was seemingly forced into retirement as a punishment, meaning his innie (the personality of his work self) would cease to exist.

For those less familiar with Severance, the series follows workers at a company recognizable as Lumon, where some employees can undergo the severance procedure which separates the consciousness of their personal self and existence from that of their function self and life. The personal life version is known as an outie, while the function self is referred to as an innie.

Irving would cautiously endeavor to do something new, and understand that the ‘new’ things were not supposed to be. Just this morning, he changed clothes, finally being capable to bathe, and realized he had never chosen his own outfit before. He reiterated the same point many, many times, and Burt responded with the same shock, as it dawned on them how much they had been missing from daily life.

When Burt and Irving break out the severed floor with their innie memories in tact, they find a pet friendly hotel room with a kitchenette to exist in, and a new job at a restaurant to support their recent lives as innies on the jog. Irving, as he flicks through a photo album from his youth that he had stolen from his home, is finding it hard to unite his past to his present, unable to see the young man as himself. Was he the same person as his outie? It was tough to navigate his rapidly developing affair that is a part of his new life, while trying to detect pieces of his past in the details of the fading, old photos from 40 years ago.

Severance: Are Burt & Irving A Couple On The Outside?

Apple TV+'s Severance has already shown how far it will go with its social experiments, but are Burt and Irving a couple on the outside? First released on February 18th, 2022, Severance has garnered immediate universal acclaim thanks to the decidedly dystopian themes it tackles. In particular, creator Dan Erickson's Severance acts as a warning against the perils of corporate drudgery and how employees are often shorn of their identity when faced with authoritarian, punitive measures in the modern workplace. Severance episode 7, "Defiant Jazz," is revelatory in this regard, showing Lumon concealing Stamp S.'s (Adam Scott) wife from him as Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachmann) and pushing a forced retirement on Optics and Plan chief Burt (Christopher Walken).
