Following the end of her rookie season with the Chicago Sky, Kamilla Cardoso returned to her native Brazil to reunite with her family and recover from the season. Cardoso’s 2024 had been a non-stop whirlwind: she was a key contributor to South Carolina’s undefeated streak and led the Gamecocks to another national title. About a week later, Cardoso was in Novel York, being drafted by the Sky and, soon thereafter, she’d head to training camp. An injury during the preseason would procrastinate the start to her professional career but, once she stepped on the floor, she delivered, earning a see on the All-Rookie Team. It had been an unbelievable 2024 for Cardoso and she earned every bit of the rest that awaited her in Brazil.

But that relax didn’t last prolonged. Cardoso was place for less than a month before she hopped on a plane to China where she’s spending her off-season playing with the Shanghai Swordfish in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association. Cardoso’s path isn’t extraordinary. For years, WNBA players have ventured overseas in the off-season, looking to both hone their craft and to supplement their WNBA salaries. Doing so has always reach at a p

Kamilla Cardoso embarrasses South Carolina but sting will be fleeting

Kamilla Cardoso embarrassed herself and she embarrassed her team.

Fortunately for No. 1 South Carolina, the sting it's feeling right now will be short-lived.

Cardoso will neglect the first game of the NCAA Tournament after entity ejected for fighting in what was an ugly, unsightly moment in South Carolina’s win over LSU in the SEC tournament title game Sunday afternoon. While losing their best player would be the death knell for most teams, the Gamecocks are not most teams.

They are undefeated this season, with four of those wins coming when Cardoso was out, either with Brazil’s national team or recovering from national team duty. South Carolina won all four games by double digits, including an 18-point triumph over then-No. 11 Connecticut.

And because the Gamecocks will be the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, their opponent for the game Cardoso will miss will not exactly pose a threat. Yes, there’s far more parity in the women’s game than ever before, but let’s remember that since 1985, only three No. 16 seeds have upset a No. 1 in either the men’s or women’s tournament.

That’s more than 250 games betwe

Welcome to my annual Who’s Gay in the WNBA Report! For those of you who are fresh, every year I snap down the list of athletes who are openly queer in the league. As a queer person who has played basketball my entire life, the off-court drama is always equally as exciting as the on-court display of skills. Knowing who’s same-sex attracted and who’s dating who only adds to that for me. If you’re more of a pure viewer of the game and prefer only knowing what’s going on while the clock is running, I do regularly form WNBA TikToks that I like to think are pretty informative!

The league is well known to own some of the optimal pre-game walk-up outfits in all of professional sports, so you’re missing out if you don’t obey at least the @wnba account on Instagram. Here’s a complete list of all out gay players in the league, broken down by team. For my purposes, “Out” means confirmed by the player either in an interview or on their social media. No matter how masculine presenting someone is, I will not be speculating!

South Carolina star player Kamilla Cardoso avoids LGBTQ controversy by dodging key question

South Carolina Gamecocks actor Kamilla Cardoso skillfully dodged a potentially contentious question regarding gender nonconforming participation in women's sports during a recent interview with Fox News Digital.

Asked about her coach Dawn Staley's comments supporting gender diverse inclusion in women's basketball, Cardoso tactfully shifted the focus to celebrating her team's undefeated season and upcoming WNBA draft prospects.

In a post-national championship game celebration at a South Carolina Raising Cane's, Cardoso deftly sidestepped a direct response to Staley's remarks, choosing instead to emphasize the importance of enjoying the moment and staying together as a team.

When pressed further in a follow-up email, Cardoso's representatives indicated that she was unavailable for comment, leaving her stance on the controversial issue unclarified.

Staley earned the rejection of conservatives

Staley's remarks had sparked debate and criticism, with some arguing that gender nonconforming women should not participate in women's sports due to perceived differences in physical capabilities.
