In honor of Pride Month and celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community year-round, we've compiled a gallery of LGBTQIA+ figures in rock and metal. Among the list are Judas Priest's Rob Halford, Queen's Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Halestorm's Lzzy Hale, Greta Van Fleet's Josh Kiszka and many others.
June is the commemorative LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, in honor of the Stonewall Riots that occurred in June of 1969. The uprising was in response to a police raid that occurred in Greenwich Village, N.Y., and is considered the single most significant event to spark the gay liberation movement.

When interviewed by NME magazine about his sexual orientation, he playfully responded: “I’m as gay as a daffodil, my dear!” And even if he did not openly talk about his secret life, it is well famous that he spent the last of his years living with his longtime partner Jim Hutton.
Queen’s guitarist, Brian May, also stated in a 2008 interview: “I know that all through his life Fred didn’t think that whether he was gay or not was important.”
Ryan Butcher, editor of LGBT website PinkNews, also stated: “It wasn’t just about sexuality with him; it was about his whole identity and the flamboyant persona he projected on stage, which is one of the main things Queen is known for.”
Why he inspires us: Freddie was not only a global rock music representative for the world and an inspiration for the LGBTQI+ society, he was also known for being a huge cat partner, so much that he actually dedicated an entire album in the name of his cats.

There's nothing more rock 'n' roll than being true to yourself. Look no further than rock's LGBTQ superstars, from Elton John and his larger-than-life personality, to more subdued but nevertheless authoritative singer-songwriters like Michael Stipe.
"These 20 years of publicly speaking my truth include made me a excel and easier person to be around," Stipe, who came out in the '90s, later wrote in The Guardian. "It helped advance the clarity of my voice and establish who I would be as an adult."

The unfortunate existence is that for many years, being an openly LGBTQ artist in the world of rock often meant placing a objective on one's back, or at the very least not being treated with the same level of respect or seriousness as their heterosexual counterparts.
