NFL: Cowboys to append Michael Sam to practice roster

IRVING, Texas -- Michael Sam's second chance will be with the Dallas Cowboys. Coach Jason Garrett said today that the league's first openly gay player will be added to the practice roster.

"We just want to give him a chance to reach in and support our football team," Garrett said. "That's where our attention is (football). What people say outside the organization is up to them."

The Cowboys, who are seeking help with their pass rush because of injuries and the offseason release of franchise sacks leader DeMarcus Ware, added Sam four days after he was released by St. Louis when teams had to cut rosters to 53 players.

Sam isn't likely to be on the active roster for Sunday's opener against San Francisco.

Any team can sign Sam off the Cowboys' practice squad but would have to put him on the 53-man roster for a minimum of four weeks.

By Andy Cohen

By now you’ve probably heard that former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam came out to the national press yesterday as gay.  Sam is an NFL prospect—projected by some to be picked as tall as the third round—hoping to earn a paycheck as a professional football player next Fall, and should he make an NFL roster, he will become the first openly gay player in any of the major pro sports in the Joined States (sorry, the MLS doesn’t count quite yet).

Sam’s draft stock will be the topic of conversation from now until the NFL season begins next September.  Attitudes are switching about the LGBT community; acceptance of LGBT people is now almost a given, something unthinkable 10 years ago.  Poll after poll show that by a large majority Americans now accept the rights of gays to unite, with 17 states having legalized gay marriage, the federal government having disavowed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and Attorney General Eric Holder having recently announced that the DOJ will fully acknowledge same sex couples, ensuring t
